Washing Cloth Diapers🛁

One of the most common questions we receive from new parents is, "How do I wash cloth diapers?" We understand that making the switch to cloth can feel overwhelming at first, but fear not! With the right knowledge and techniques, washing cloth diapers can be simple and effective. In this guide, we'll walk you through the step-by-step process to ensure your baby's diapers are clean, fresh, and ready for reuse.

Step 1: Prepping Your Diapers

Before you start using your cloth diapers, it's essential to prep them properly. Most cloth diapers, especially those made from natural fibers like cotton or hemp, require multiple washes to reach their maximum absorbency. Wash new diapers at least once but preferably three times with detergent and 60 degrees celcius water, drying them between each wash. This process makes them shrink in size so they fit better in your diaper cover, it helps remove any residues from the manufacturing process and ensures your diapers are ready for use.

Step 2: Diaper Storage

Once your diapers are prepped and ready to go, it's time to start using them! After each diaper change, store the used diapers in a dry pail or wet bag until laundry day. Avoid leaving dirty diapers sitting for too long, as this can lead to odor and stains.

Step 3: Pre-Wash

When it's time to wash your cloth diapers, start with a pre-wash cycle to remove any solids and excess urine. Use cold water and a small amount of detergent to rinse the diapers thoroughly, some washing machines have this built into the programs. This step helps prevent stains and ensures that the main wash cycle is more effective.

Step 4: Main Wash

After the pre-wash, it's time for the main wash cycle. Wash your diapers in 60 degrees celcius water with a full amount of detergent. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for detergent usage, as using too much or too little can affect the cleanliness of your diapers. You can also add extra rinses if necessary to ensure all detergent residues are removed.

Step 5: Drying

Once the main wash cycle is complete, it's time to dry your cloth diapers. Line drying is the most eco-friendly option and helps prolong the lifespan of your diapers. If line drying isn't possible, you can use a dryer on a low or medium heat setting. Avoid using fabric softeners or dryer sheets, as these can reduce the absorbency of your diapers.

Additional Tips:

  • Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the fabric of your diapers and irritate your baby's skin.
  • Consider using a diaper sprayer or diaper liners to help remove solids more easily.
  • Unbutton the inserts from the diaper covers to thoroughly wash them and prolong their lifespan.
  • Every once in a while you can wash the inserts (not the covers!) on 90 degrees celcius to deep clean them.

By following these simple steps, washing cloth diapers will become a seamless part of your routine. Not only are cloth diapers better for the environment, but they're also gentler on your baby's skin and budget-friendly in the long run. Happy diapering!
